TOP CAPTION
Billy Seebach was born in Waukon, which is in Iowa....
PICTURE
shot down a twisty road through a deep valley. The forty-foot cliffs to the left are steep and overgrown, but with occasional limestone outcrops. Three or four red-tailed hawks soar in the updrafts along the cliff-edge. A farmyard is to the right, backed by another less-steep rise. The road meanders down more or less left to right, and in the distance a small town crouches at the side of a fairly narrow Mississippi, with a steep bank at the far side.
BOTTOM CAPTION
People think "Iowa" means "flat". But Allamakee County is the northeast shoulder of the state, full of twisty-tilty valleys, old glacier eskers, limestone bluffs and caves and sinkholes....

PAGE SIX
PANEL ONE large inset, top-right
CAPTION
It was two months before his thirteenth birthday that Billy Seebach's life changed forever. It began with an accident...

PANEL TWO splash, entire page except for top left & bottom right.
CAPTION
Billy, only twelve, ran to his father's aide...
IMAGE
Wide shot of the steep, partly ploughed hillside. Tractor has toppled on its side, crushing Emil's chest beneath the engine so only his head and arm are visible beneath it. Billy's figure runs up the hillside toward the wreck, seen from behind.
BILLY
Dad! Dad, are you all right!!!
PANEL THREE balancing top-left, largish inset bottom right.
IMAGE
Billy from rear seen bending over his father's face. Emil is gasping for breath, eyes full of fear, contorted in pain.
EMIL (tiny lettering in a huge blank balloon)
Go get help, Billy ....
Run for hel... (gasp!)
BOTTOM CAPTION
What else could a twelve-year-old do?

PAGE SEVEN
PANEL ONE top third of page
CAPTION
But ten minutes later, at Waukon Hospital...
IMAGE
Emergency Ward. Billy stands at left, holding his father's body cradled in his two arms, tall, determined look on his young face. An intern runs toward him with a gurney, as a nurse at far-right charges out around her desk toward him also
TRIAGE NURSE
My God, boy! What's happened?
BILLY:
Dad's tractor fell on him! You gotta help...!!!
PANEL TWO left half of center tier
IMAGE
Interns rush Emil away on a gurney in background. In foreground surprised nurse rushes to grab Billy, who is fainting.

PANEL THREE right half center tier
CAPTION
All things considered, Emil was pretty lucky...
IMAGE
Emergency O.R., team working on his chest.
INTERN
Cracked most of his ribs, but his heart's okay, and I don't think the lungs were punctured. Old boy must live right!
PANEL FOUR left half bottom tier
CAPTION
It was another story with Billy...
IMAGE
Hospital room, Billy lying unconscious in bed behind a nurse and Doctor Petersen.
NURSE
He walked in carrying his dad in his arms, and just collapsed! He's been this way for an hour now...relaxed, breathing normal, but look at his temperature!
PANEL FIVE right half final tier
CAPTION The Head Resident, Dr. Petersen, called a staff meeting about his condition...
IMAGE
Conference room. Three doctors of all sexes, races, ages, sit listening to his presentation, eyebrows raised.
PETERSEN
Heart and respiration are normal, muscle tone normal. No dehydration. He seems to be unconscious, or asleep. But he's had a temperature of between a hundred and eight and a hundred and fourteen for more than eighteen hours now....
DOCTOR
That can't be! He should be dead by now!
PANEL SIX small inset far bottom right
IMAGE
Tight close head-shot, Petersen scowling in rage
PETERSEN
Why do you think I called this conference!!!!

PAGE EIGHT
PANEL ONE across left two-thirds of top tier
CAPTION
Emil was out of danger, Billy was apparently resting easily, if peculiarly. It was Dr. Petersen who was most troubled...
IMAGE
Petersen at a cluttered desk, a distraught hand run up through his hair, a journal in his hand. Across from him, a nurse with a carafe of coffee. The desk has a p.c. with some LYCOS search-message on it. Strewn on it are heavy tomes, a scatter of medical journals, and one or two X-MEN comics
NURSE
Aren't you going to sleep at all, Warren?
PETERSEN
That kid's unreal! Medical science says he should be dead, but he's fine! I've only found two or three cases that even come close to this... And they're pretty unreal too!
PANEL TWO last third, top tier
CAPTION
Emil made a swift recovery, but...
IMAGE
Emil taped into a chest-cast from chin to navel, sitting up in bed. MOM sits at his side, Petersen stands behind her
EMIL
I feel fine! But what's happened to poor Billy?
MOM
He fels so HOT! But he looks okay...
PETERSEN
Emil, all I can say is that he's in no danger, and we're trying to find out why he's still unconscious...
PANEL THREE across second tier
CAPTION
Billy's condition remained unchanged for three long days...
IMAGE
Looking into Billy's room where there are monitoring machines connected to the small form in the bed. A nurse sitting just inside the room talks to a nurse in foreground looking at Billy's figure
NURSE OUTSIDE
Any change?
NURSE INSIDE
He's fine...until you try to touch him! But there's someone here round the clock, just in case...
PANELS FOUR, FIVE, SIX small tight face-shots from left to right across the bottom of the page.
CAPTION OVER ONE
But, at long last...
IMAGE ONE
Tight close-up of Billy's unconscious face. Slight flutter- lines about the eyes.

IMAGE THREE
Face fully awake, eyes open, face aware.
PANEL FOUR final panel bottom right
IMAGE
Billy in bed from navel up, excited nurse at his side
BILLY
Hi, lady! Could I have something to eat?

PAGE NINE
PANEL ONE largish inset, top-left
CAPTION
The story of Emil's accident circulated through the sparsely settled county, but there were details that emerged only slowly that even Emil didn't know about...
IMAGE
Police chief standing in front of Dr. Petersen, insisting
CHIEF FEIT
Doc, whether I belive it or not, I know what I saw, and you gotta come out to the Seebach place and take a look at it...
PANEL TWO full page splash, as before
IMAGE
The scene of the accident, as before. Contour-plowed furrows up to the chewed-up ground and the boulder, but the tractor (what's left of it) sits thirty feet up the bare slope, rusting. Chief Feit and the Doc are standing by the chewed-up place, Feit gesturing and pointing.
CHIEF FEIT
It happened right here. And we thought Billy rolled the rig down the slope off his Dad --- but that would have smashed his face all to hell.
No, looks like Billy just picked that tractor up and THREW it --- thirty feet up hill!
PANEL THREE bigish inset bottom right
IMAGE
Feit confronting Petersen on the slope
CHIEF FEIT
But that ain't all, Doc. I got two witnesses -- farmer in the next field, and one of your ambulance drivers -- swear they saw Billy, carrying his father, FLYING THROUGH THE AIR on his way to the Hospital. Neither one's comfortable talking about it, though..

PAGE TEN
PANEL ONE left one third of top tier
CAPTION
The family had an economic crisis on its hand...
IMAGE
Emil in his plastic/plaster armor, sitting up, agitated, in bed
EMIL
'S gonna be two weeks at least 'fore I can get back on a tractor, and by then...
PANEL TWO rest of top tier
Emil in bed in hospital room, Billy and Mom around him in agitated conversation.
MOM
Now you concentrate on getting out of here in one piece, Emil! Junior Gjere's been by every afternoon to help me with the milking. The O'Mara boys said they'd see to the harrowing and the planting. And Torgersen Impliments will give us a new tractor with a lease-with-intent-to-purchase that the bank's refiguring into our loan...
BILLY
And I can plow some after school!!!
PANEL TWO first block on second tier
IMAGE
Close-up of Mom's stern, lecturing, glowering face.
MOM
NO you CAN'T son! I got one of my men near killed by those fields! You'll stick to your schoolin' till you're old enough, Hear??
PANEL THREE rest of middle tier
IMAGE
Petersen's office. Doc seated to the left at desk, Billy on a chair in front of him. Doc is slumped back, gesturing, with Billy hunched and a little tense.
DOC
...So you gave us quite a fright, Billy! Three days of a really unbelievable fever! The books say you should be dead!
Do you have any recollections of it at all?
PANEL FOUR smallish close-up centered on the bottom tier
IMAGE
Close-in focus on Billy's frowning, serious young face
BILLY
Well, sir, after the accident things are a little vague ...
But after that there was a dream. A LONG dream. But I remember it.
I remember the whole thing...

PANEL ONE left third, top half of page
CAPTION
"I started hearing a voice, and thought it was my Dad. But when I finally saw him... "
IMAGE
Think SPECTRE. Billy as small figure seen from the back looks up at a tall, commanding figure dressed as a Cree indian. Stern frown on the face...the face of Emil Seebach.
INDIAN
You're no little boy any more, Billy Seebach!
Time you made a Dream Quest Journey!
Time you found out what your Real NAME is!!
PANEL TWO center third, top half
CAPTION
"It was odd. Nothing every stayed the same for very long!
All of a sudden I was climbing a cliff... "
IMAGE
Billy struggles to keep a hand-hold on the mother of all steep limestone cliffs. A huge red-tailed hawk hovers tauntingly near him. It has the face of Miss Speck.
HAWK
What's your REAL Name, Billy Seebach?
Is your real name... LONG DIVISION, perhaps?
PANEL THREE last third, top half
CAPTION
"It took forever, and hurt my hands,
but when I got to the top.... "
IMAGE
Terrified Billy, already falling, clings with one hand to a crumble of cliff-top. Tall above him a demonic version of a cowboy-playmate contemptuously kicks the cliff causing Billy's only hand-hold to break away in his hand
BILLY
Billy Seebach! I'm Billy... AAAH!!!
COWBOY
That CAN'T be your Name, BOY!
Billy Seebach's DYING Today!
PANEL FOUR across top half of bottom space
CAPTION
"I fell forever, and crashed into the earth so hard I felt all my bones torn away from me... "
IMAGE
Cross-section of earth, with Billy's ballooned body, torn open at the bottom, in repose, eaten by worms. Just above the surface, as if bending to whisper into the grave, is the stern face of the Emil/Indian.
INDIAN
You're dead now, Billy. Billy Seebach's WORM-FOOD now!
PANEL FIVE half bottom tier
"And I WAS dead and buried. But something called me back.."
IMAGE
Emil/Indian bending, calling to a stretched blue semi- transparent bubble-Billy emerging from the loam, his face barely recognizable as his bubble-face
EMIL/INDIAN
C'MON, Billy, you can't lie there forever! You're on a Dream Quest, remember? But you better find your BONES before you can go anywhere at all!
PANEL SIX right half bottom tier
"I wasn't ME anymore.... "
IMAGE
A wraith-like Billy kneels before the Indian, pleading abjectly. Indian stands on some "white logs" and lolls back against a "white tree-trunk". It should be apparent only on second reading that these are foot and ankle and shin bones
BILLY
My bones! Please, help me find my BONES!
INDIAN
Oh my, Billy Seebach, you're really OUT OF YOUR HEAD, aren't you?

PAGE THIRTEEN
SPLASH PANEL entire page
IMAGE
A huge, tall, exaggeratedly-foreshortened skeleton stretches up into the sky from the hilly landscape, like a tree stretching its limbs; red-tailed hawks circle the skull. The Indian at the foot points the way skyward, and the wraith-Billy cranes upward in awe at the quest
INDIAN
Yes! Out of your head Indeed! You better climb back up there!

PAGE FOURTEEN
PANEL ONE left half of top tier
CAPTION
"But as I climbed to the knee, he asked... "
IMAGE
Indian sits complacently on the knee-cap gesturing nonchalantly with one hand as Billy struggles up the slippery shin-bone toward him
INDIAN
Well, you're finding your land-legs again, I see. Tell me Billy...... can you DANCE?
PANEL TWO right half, top tier
CAPTION
"Dance? Of COURSE I could dance! "
IMAGE
Billy in a flowing Indian feather-headdress, stone tomahawk in one hand, other hand to mouth, stomps the same dance as before
BILLY

PANEL THREE rest of space, bursting panel-borders
CAPTION
"But when the Buffalo DID come back... "
IMAGE
The panel is a sea of stampeding buffalo-bodies as far as the eye can see, running from deep right to front panel-center. Full up in center two snorting, angry bull buffalo bring their sharp, vindictive hooves down on the fallen, supine body of Billy. They tromp his bleeding body into the dirt.
Thrown on his back, Billy's terrified face and one arm flung back out of the panel to the bottom mimick the exact same position Emil took under the tractor.

PAGE FIFTEEN
PANEL ONE 2/3rds of top tier
CAPTION
"Then I was climbing again... "
IMAGE
Billy is struggling to climb the backbone, one rib at a time, with the Indian sitting easily two ribs above his head, scoffing down at him

Oh God, why am I always DYING all the time??
INDIAN
GOD?? You question GOD, little boy?
Why don't you ask Him yourself?
PANEL TWO stretches down from top to occupy the right third of the second tier
IMAGE
Billy stands looking up into the face of a living Kachina from Hopi or Zuni world, one with wide horizontal slits as eyes
KACHINA
I am GOD, Billy Seebach!
You had a question, did you?
PANEL THREE left 1/3 of remaining space
IMAGE
Billy's head at far left tight foreground. We are looking past Billy's right ear and eyebrow at the full face of the Kachina, face to face with Billy
BILLY
Oh yes, please! Please, TELL Me:
Why do you let BAD people do BAD THINGS???
PANEL FOUR central third of remaining space
IMAGE
Billy's head as before. We stare as a man's two hands reach up and pull the Kachina mask up off a man's face to about the level of the eyebrows
KACHINA
You think you know so much, my young friend?
You think it's EASY being God, don't you?
All right......
PANEL FIVE bottom right
IMAGE
Billy's head as before, but we now see the INSIDE of the cylindrical mask, and out through the eye-slits. The man has jammed the mask down over Billy's face. The Man's face is that of the Pastor
PASTOR

PAGE SIXTEEN
PANEL ONE top left quarter of page
IMAGE
Skeleton faces us, seen from chin to sternum
Indian sits on skeleton's right clavical at left turned toward Billy, just climbing up backbone to a perch where he rests an elbow on the left clavical. Indian is taunting, Billy is angry and about to charge once he gets his footing

Okay, you're GOD now, right Boy? Now show us all how you intend to FIX Everything!!
BILLY
Stop LAUGHING at me! Stop KILLING Me!!
Stop Doing BAD THINGS To Me!!!

PANEL THREE bottom half of page
IMAGE
Three-quarters side shot, with Billy's raging arms strangling figure. The Indian's face has torn in two and fallen away on either side like shredding paper. Underneath, lewdly grinning at the raging Billy, is Billy's Own triumphant face

And who is it does bad things???
Is it just me, Billy?
Or are YOU just as GUILTY as I am!!!!!

PAGE SEVENTEEN
PANEL ONE full page
IMAGE
A skull fills the entire page, anatomically correct down to the grin. The eye-sockets are windows into the skull cavity, where we can see Indian, standing, through one eye, and Billy through the other.
INDIAN
All right then, Mister God, you're not out of your head anymore, are you? Ready to change the world?
Or are you finding it a little harder than you thought?
BILLY
Don't call me that!!!!!
PANEL TWO one of two small insets bottom-right, one on top of the other

A Vodou ceremony, Indian functioning as priest, with floor- markings and candles and pertinent paraphernalia.
Filling the center of the space, Billy stands, hunched forward, like a horse pawing the air. On his back an Angel of Death skeleton rides him, bony knees jammed into his arm- pits, like a rodeo cowboy on a bronco
INDIAN
That's it! Ask the LOAS to Ride You! Give yourself up to their power! Let them SPEAK! Let them ACT through YOU! Submit! Be the Horse and let them RIDE YOU! USE their power As Your OWN!!!!!!

His litany can be a balloon filling space to the right of the skull
INDIAN
Well, your Quest is nearly over. And what have you found along the way?
BILLY
I learned that all things must change, or they die.
I learned the past is example, not cure.
I learned violence devours itself in guilt.
I learned even God cannot do everything alone.
I learned that what I need most lies inside myself.
PANEL TWO left half, second tier
