Hi. I am larry stark from The Theater Mirror, and we need your help.
Specifically, we need names and addresses of REVIEWERS in your area, whether for newspapers, t-v, radio, magazines, or even on the Internet like myself.
Last year a number of reviewers here surprised Boston by voting a series of awards (best production, director, actor, actress... that kind of thing) and centering our attention on the under-publicized smaller theatres neglected by the major critical voices in the city --- based loosely on the Obie Awards.
This year we'd like to expand this into what we'd like to call the:
Trouble is, we've had difficulty FINDING other reviewers in other cities in the six New England states. So, who reviews your shows? Please send us names and addresses so we can contact them and send them explanations and solicit from them nominations of the good work you and your colleages are doing. (We were egged on in this expansion by PROSCENiUM Magazine/Programs, and we expect they'll give the "IRNE" Awards some added publicity.)
So please e-mail me names and addresses of any reviewers you know of, in your area or wherever in New England. The year's end grows on apace, don'tchaknow....
Love,
===Anon.

LARRY STARK EXPLAINS:
Last night (okay, the morning of 21 October) the above letter was sent
to the e-mail addresses of the 90-odd theatres in The Mirror's links-list of
theater web-sites in New England. If you didn't get a copy, you can still
answer the question and help make an Independent Reviewers of New England
award for excellent theatrical work in your area a reality.
I will archive all responses in a Reviewers in N.E.
archive. Reviewers will be contacted by snail-mail or e-mail with ballots and
explanations just as soon as we know who the heck they are!
Love,
===Anon.

Yes, I got your mail about the IRNE's and I'll be happy to participate in
voting. I'm not sure what else you are asking of us. I haven't been to
even half as many shows as you in the past year, though. Also, I don't
think you've seen any of the ones I've been to, and the other reviewers
are also so spread out that I imagine getting much agreement amongst
reviewers is going to be very difficult. I don't understand how you are
going to cover the areas outside Boston anyhow. When you have any more
info on the details of how it will work, let us know.
~Best,
Angel

Okay, thanks Larry. I have not seen too many plays, just what I have
sent you plus a couple I did not wish to review. But I think that Rhode
Island should be in the running , so I will pursue this..as soon as I
digest this process.

Dear Anon.:
Actually, I am a reviewer myself, weekly, of theater and music events for the
Shelburne News in Shelburne VT (near Burlington). I do VT reviewing, as well
as the opera in Montréal and the Centaur Theatre, which is English-language
and the Saidye Bronfman Theatre, which is English and Yiddish. I also am a
correspondent for The Burlington Free Press ( a Gannett paper). The Freep also
has Sharry Underwood for dance and sometimes theater, Seven Days has Eric
Eckilsen on a sometime basis, and Vox probably has a reviewer, but I don't
know who that is presently. Then there is Jim Lowe in Barre/Montpelier, who is
a fine critic.
I review weekly at all levels of the theater and music world. I work 50 weeks
a year, and try to see as much as I can every week, sometimes five
performances per week, of both local and one-time performances. Have been at
it for 6 yrs.
An explanation for greater readership possibilities might be in order. Maybe
you could explain when you have a moment.
Thanks.
Sincerely,
Dan Wolfe

What a good idea. The Keene, NH/Brattleboro, VT area has very few theater
reviewers, all are really stringers; I have been reviewing theater in the
So. Vermont and sometimes So. Eastern NH (but none at Keene State where I
work) for 10 years. My primary paper is the Brattleboro Reformer, but
sometimes I write for other publications.
You can reach me here at work, address below or at home, 237 Camp Arden

Other reveiwers are Jim Kates, Dunton Rd., Fitzwilliam, NH 03447; and Frank

In Lewiston/Auburn, Maine the reviewer is Dan Marois for the Lewiston Sun
Journal. Having been involved with theatre (mainly community) since 1960 in
NYS and ME. I have read many reviewers and find Mr. Marois especially bright.
He writes intelligently and truthfully with constructive criticism. Keep up
the good work and interesting copy on your site.

Hi Larry . . .
Just read your request for reviewers in the New England area. I'd like
to recommend Ken Happe who does theater reviews for Worcester Magazine.
He's an extremely intelligent critic and a very fine actor as well. His
email address is: KHappe@holycross.edu. I'm copying him on this email
so he knows what I'm getting him in to! Hope all is well with you.

Larry,
I'll have to poke thru my files (which are currently in several boxes, I've
recently moved) and get back to you. I'll also check with the local papers
when I get a chance and see who's covering what.
You might also want to contact Angel (angel@antistatic.com) of Sceneplay
(http://sceneplay.antistatic.com), a website that primarily does reviews and
covers theater in NH and southern Massachusetts/Boston area.
Sounds like a good idea, please keep me posted on what's happening with it.

Hi!Ken Happe here. Got your letter.
I've been reviewing shows for about 20 years for Worcester Magazine and for about 6 years on and off have done a weekly tlkshow reviewing plays on a local cable access station that was aired in three town in Worc/ county. I'll send you some of my stuff in a day or so and see if you really want me. I see from 70-100 shows a year: pro, semi-pro,commnity, college - I don't do kids shows...it is in my contract. Nowayds (Im 60) I also doont got to see Odd Couple or annie or Oliver ever again - I also don't type very well. And even tho I see a lot I didn't see all your nominees: Here's what I did see on our list: Game of Love and chance, Company, Will rogers (which amazed me),How the Other Half - that's all.
I'll print out your stuff and see if I understand it all.
It sounds like a great idea and I'm all for it.
Im amzed at your web pages. Bravo!

Ha! Reviews of our shows? We haven't been reviewed for over ten years by the
major paper, the Hartford Courant. The Journal Inquirer (Manchester) has a
"reviewer" [NOTE: this letter is edited to protect the guilty...]
The New
Britain Herald does review community theatre on occasion, but only for New
Britain productions. And the identity of the reviewer(s) is cloaked by
initials which haven't changed in twenty years. We suspect it's more than one
person, but no nothing about him/her.
However, I do know one person who might be interested. I don't know that she
is online, though. And, to be honest, [ ... ]

Unfortunately, in Southern CT, no one reviews our shows. The policy of the
local papers is that, if you're not Equity, you're not reviewed.
