Cricket's Notebook:
Well, at least I tried.
"Tried what?" I hear you saying. Well, click on FRINGES to find out.
What I did was make a listings-page in The Mirror, and then I tried to get playgoers to look into it with an advertisement in Boston's METRO newspaper.
Only 842 did so, to date.
Why did I do it?
I hoped I could convince all the small, "doing it for love" companies doing surprisingly good theater that Combining their resources to buy advertising could help combat the snooty indifference of all the media in Boston toward "Fringe" theatres might give them some pride, and maybe increase their audiences.
The ad cost $90 a week, but I thought I could charge the theater-companies listed the cost of one ticket per week to pay for it --- and several did pay.
But there were two weeks when there were no new Fringe plays opening; I am lousy at pestering people for money; and too many companies just didn't understand or think it worth the money.
Anyway, for the record I borrowed $500 from a friend to "prime the pump" and that money's gone.
I cannot afford to continue the ad myself.
