Childhood should --- and must --- be a time of wonder, for dreams can become goals and goals, reality, and theatre should --- and must --- be a part of it, alongside school, movies and sports (what can be more wondrous than seeing live art created right before your eyes?); the Footlight Club did its duty with a one-hour condensation of Kenneth Grahame’s THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS. Mr. Grahame’s Mole, Rat, Badger and Toad played out their adventures before a simple setting of pole-curtain and potted plants; their costumes, next door to street clothes; their props, minimal; their imaginations, energized. Director Daniel Bourque also kept things simple, plotwise, retaining the original’s charm and staging his results as commedia dell’arte, the easiest of theatre for young minds to grasp --- the attending children loved it (thank you, Mr. Bourque); their parents were beguiled, enough.

Elizabeth Doran made an amusing (female) Toad, with enough fleeting mannerisms to fuel a repertory company, and Kristopher Moreau contributed a commanding bass voice, all the more impressive when issuing from the lankest, hippie-est of Badgers. Here is a budding Shakespearean in need of grooming (in more ways than one)…
