AVNER Brings JOY
to the LYRIC Stage

By Beverly Creasey

You know when you’re trying to carry one too many packages to the post office to beat the holiday rush—and they all crash to the sidewalk before you can get to the car? Or when you’re trying to extract one tiny Q-tip from the box and they all fall out and you have to throw each and every one of them away? And then you smash your fingers in the medicine cabinet?

Avner Eisenberg, AKA Avner the Eccentric, makes hay of all those frustrating mishaps, wringing joy from what might, on any other day, drive you to distraction. He’s a vaudeville clown. He’s Emmett Kelly mixed with Charlie Chaplin and he looks like a jolly Fidel Castro, if such a thing were possible.

The next time you can’t find your sleeve when you’re trying to gracefully don your overcoat in public, think of Avner turning embarrassment into gold, chasing his sweater around and around his torso. The kids in the audience lapped it up, giggling non-stop. They can even try some of Avner’s EXCEPTIONS TO GRAVITY (playing thru Dec. 23) at home! (I wouldn’t stock up on napkins, though.)

The adults were smiling. The children roared. Who but a Grinch would take EXCEPTION to that?
